Firefighters responded to a structure fire in Brighton after emergency crews were dispatched to reports of a building engulfed in flames. The incident prompted a significant response from local fire departments as crews worked to bring the blaze under control and protect nearby properties.
According to fire officials, the Brighton Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 7:15 p.m. to a reported structure fire near U.S. Highway 67 and Smitty Lane. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a large metal building, measuring approximately 90 by 40 feet, that was heavily involved in fire. The intensity of the flames required an aggressive defensive firefighting operation and mutual aid from neighboring departments.
Firefighters from the Godfrey, QEM, and Jerseyville fire departments assisted at the scene, while JCH EMS remained on standby to provide medical support if needed. The Jersey County Sheriff’s Department also responded to help manage traffic around the incident as emergency operations continued.
Officials said crews faced several challenges during the response, including limited access to a reliable water supply because of the fire’s location. To overcome this obstacle, firefighters established portable water ponds along Highway 67 and used relay pumping operations to deliver water from tankers to the engines battling the blaze. These coordinated efforts enabled firefighters to maintain a continuous water supply while working to contain the fire.
The firefighting operation lasted for several hours before the fire was brought under control. Authorities confirmed that all responding units returned to service shortly after 10:30 p.m., and no injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported during the incident.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Fire investigators are expected to examine the scene to establish how the blaze started and whether any accidental or other contributing factors were involved. Officials have not released an estimate of the damage sustained by the structure.
